5 Steps to Reduce Allergens in Your Home This Spring

Allergens in the air, such as pollen, usually rear their ugly heads in the spring months. Itchy watery eyes, congestion, coughing, and headaches strike, making most people miserable. Fortunately, even if the outdoor air quality is poor, there are things you can do to improve the quality of the air indoors. The heating and air experts at Allied Services, Inc. recommend taking these steps toward reducing allergens in your home.

1. Upgrade to HEPA Filters

Filters in your furnace are designed to help remove contaminants like dust and pet dander so you don’t continue breathing in the same dirty air. You can improve filtration performance simply by upgrading your filter to a HEPA-style filter with a MERV rating of at least 10.

2. Change Your Filter

Even high-quality and high-performance filters need to be changed or cleaned regularly. Changing or cleaning your filters every 1-3 months will give you better air, and contribute to a more efficient and reliable heating and air conditioning system.

3. Use Air Purifiers

Air purifiers and ionizers use electricity to attract and trap particles in the air. A more reliable purifier will also have a MERV rating of 10 or higher. Your heating and air professionals can help you choose and install a proper purifying system.

4. Keep Air Ducts Clean

Clean air ducts will lead to clean indoor air. Having your air ducts cleaned professionally will remove debris from the air that can be irritating to your allergies.

5. Balance Humidity

Too much or too little humidity can cause an allergy attack. Allergy symptoms, such as headaches or eye redness, can be brought on by very dry or very moist air. Comfortable, healthy air has a humidity of 40%, and the use of humidifiers or dehumidifiers can help achieve that level.

If allergies get you down each spring and you are looking for some added relief, Allied Services can help you improve your indoor air quality via your HVAC system. We also install, maintain, and repair existing systems, so contact us today at (937) 269-5059 to schedule an appointment or request a free estimate.
