HVAC Maintenance

3 Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Even though the official start of spring is still weeks away, this winter has been especially mild in the Midwest, and homeowners are already looking forward to warmer temperatures and open windows. With that in mind, you may be thinking about what you’ll need to do around the house to prepare for spring. Each new season brings with it different routines for the homeowner. So, today, our team at Allied Services, Inc. is discussing three things you should be doing to prepare your HVAC system before spring arrives.

1. Change Your Air Filter

We always recommend changing your air filter every 30 to 90 days regardless of the season, but if you haven’t been doing that regularly, the start of a new season is a great time to get the job done. Air filters in your HVAC unit are meant to improve the air quality in your home as well as the overall function of your heating and cooling systems. If you have an old or dirty filter in your unit, the air won’t flow at an optimal level, and your system will have to work harder, wasting energy and potentially fostering mold or mildew growth. Start spring off right with a clean air filter.

2. Clean Your Outside Unit

Because it’s located outside, your HVAC system is exposed to all weather conditions, including sunlight, rain, and snow. Debris is, therefore, likely to have accumulated around your unit, particularly after the fall and winter months. Clear out anything that is within two feet of your system, including leaves, branches, dirt, and plants. Moreover, now is the ideal time to inspect your equipment for any damage that may have occurred during the winter.

3. Schedule Routine Maintenace

Many homeowners are in the habit of waiting until they really need their air conditioner before turning it on for the first time in the spring. They wait until the temperatures reach 90 degrees and they are absolutely too uncomfortable to put it off any longer. This method is actually pretty risky, because if your air conditioner isn’t in top condition, it may fail you and you’ll need it repaired or replaced ASAP. This year, be proactive and schedule routine maintenance and a tune-up with a professional from Allied Services, Inc. Then, when you’re ready to turn it on, you’ll know it’s ready to go.
